Adult ADHD Psychiatrist in Gurugram and Online Across India

If you have spent years struggling with focus, follow-through, restlessness, or a mind that never seems to switch off — and you are wondering whether it might be ADHD — this is the right place to start. Dr. Anindo Mitra (MBBS, MD Psychiatry, JIPMER) assesses and treats adult ADHD with a careful, unhurried, diagnosis-first approach, in-person at Athena Behavioural Health, Sector 47, Gurugram, and online for patients across India.

Adult ADHD is common, under-recognised in India, and very treatable. But it is also over-diagnosed when assessments are rushed, and its symptoms overlap heavily with anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and thyroid disease. Getting the diagnosis right — before starting any medication — is the single most important step, and it is where this practice begins.

Who this page is for

This page is for you if you are an adult who:

  • Has difficulty sustaining attention on tasks, misses deadlines, or leaves things half-finished despite genuinely trying.
  • Feels chronically disorganised, forgetful, or overwhelmed by everyday admin.
  • Was told as a child you were "bright but not applying yourself," or only started struggling once demands increased at university or work.
  • Experiences inner restlessness, impulsivity, or difficulty regulating emotions.
  • Suspects ADHD after reading about it, and wants a proper clinical assessment rather than a quick label.

It is equally for the person who is unsure — many people arrive worried they are "just making excuses." A thorough assessment gives you a clear answer either way.

How Dr. Mitra approaches adult ADHD

The approach follows what Dr. Mitra calls a cafeteria approach: you are shown every reasonable option — assessment tools, medication, non-medication strategies, and therapy — with the evidence, benefits, and trade-offs for each, and then you decide together.

For ADHD specifically, that means:

  1. A structured, unrushed assessment. ADHD in adults requires evidence of symptoms across settings and a developmental history reaching back to childhood. This cannot be done in a five-minute consultation.
  2. Ruling out mimics first. Anxiety, depression, poor sleep, thyroid dysfunction, and substance use can all look like ADHD. These are actively screened for before any diagnosis is confirmed.
  3. A stepwise treatment plan. Where ADHD is confirmed, treatment is built around your goals — not automatically starting with the strongest stimulant, but choosing the right combination of medication and practical strategies for you.
  4. Honest conversations about medication. If stimulant or non-stimulant medication is appropriate, you are told what it does, how it is monitored, and when it might be reviewed or stopped.

The ADHD care pathway — explore each step

This hub links to dedicated pages that go deeper into each part of adult ADHD care:

What happens in a consultation

Your first consultation is a focused 30-minute appointment in which Dr. Mitra takes a detailed history — your current difficulties, how far back they go, your school and work history, sleep, mood, and any family history. Where helpful, validated rating scales are used to support (never to replace) clinical judgement. You leave with a written biopsychosocial formulation and a clear plan for what comes next, whether that is a diagnosis and treatment options, further assessment, or reassurance that ADHD is not the best explanation for your symptoms.

In-person in Gurugram and online across India

Dr. Mitra consults in-person at Athena Behavioural Health, Sector 47, Gurugram, and online via Zoom or Google Meet for patients anywhere in India. Consultations are available in English, Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil. Online ADHD care covers the same clinical scope as in-person visits, with the practical caveat that certain ADHD medications are controlled substances and prescribing follows Indian regulations.

Safety and when to seek urgent help

ADHD itself is not an emergency, but it can travel with conditions that need prompt attention. If you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself, severe depression, or a mental health crisis, do not wait for a scheduled appointment — contact emergency services, go to your nearest hospital, or call a crisis helpline such as Tele-MANAS on 14416 (India's national mental health helpline). This page is educational and does not replace an individual consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can adult ADHD be diagnosed for the first time in adulthood? Yes. Many adults are diagnosed for the first time in their 20s, 30s, or later — often after a child, sibling, or partner is diagnosed, or when rising demands overwhelm the coping strategies that worked before. A valid diagnosis does require evidence that some symptoms were present in childhood, even if they were never formally recognised.

Do I definitely need medication if I have ADHD? No. Medication is one of several effective options and it is always your choice. Some people do very well with behavioural strategies, environmental changes, and therapy. Where medication is appropriate, its role, benefits, and monitoring are explained fully so you can make an informed decision.

Is my anxiety actually ADHD, or the other way around? They frequently coexist and can look similar. Part of a careful assessment is working out which came first, which is driving your difficulties now, and in what order to treat them. See ADHD and Anxiety for more.

Can I be assessed for ADHD online? Yes. Adult ADHD assessment can be conducted effectively over video. Some ADHD medications are controlled and prescribing follows Indian regulations, which will be explained during your consultation.

How long does an ADHD assessment take? Assessment is not a single quick test. It usually involves a detailed history and validated rating scales, and may span more than one appointment where needed to reach an accurate diagnosis.

Will an ADHD diagnosis go on a permanent record that affects my job? Your clinical information is confidential. Concerns about disclosure, workplace implications, and documentation can be discussed openly during your consultation.
