Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
When a child or teenager is struggling — with anxiety, low mood, attention, behaviour, or the pressures of growing up — parents often feel worried and unsure where to turn. Early, thoughtful psychiatric support can make a lasting difference. Dr. Anindo Mitra (MBBS, MD Psychiatry, JIPMER), who is pursuing fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry (IACAM), provides caring assessment and treatment for young people, in-person in Gurugram and online across India.
Who this is for
This page is for parents and families concerned about a child or adolescent who may be experiencing:
- Anxiety, excessive worry, or school refusal.
- Low mood, irritability, or withdrawal.
- Attention, focus, or behavioural difficulties, including ADHD.
- Sleep problems, exam and academic stress, or difficulties with peers.
- Emotional or behavioural changes that are affecting home or school life.
A developmentally aware, family-centred approach
Children and teenagers are not small adults — their mental health is best understood in the context of their development, family, and school environment. Dr. Mitra's assessment involves the young person and, appropriately, their parents, taking time to understand what is happening across settings before reaching any conclusion.
Treatment is careful and conservative, especially regarding medication in young people:
- Understanding and formulation first. Many difficulties are best addressed through support, environmental changes, and therapy.
- Therapy and psychoeducation. Evidence-based psychological support, coordinated with experienced clinical psychologists, and guidance for parents.
- Medication only where clearly indicated, at the lowest effective dose, with careful monitoring, and always with a clear explanation to family and young person.
- Coordination with school and family where helpful.
What to expect
The aim is to help your child function and feel better at home, at school, and with friends. Parents are partners throughout, and you will receive a clear explanation of the assessment and the plan.
In-person in Gurugram and online across India

Frequently asked questions
At what age do you see children? Dr. Mitra assesses children and adolescents; the suitability and approach depend on the child's age and concern. Contact the practice to discuss your specific situation.
Will my child be put on medication? Not by default. In young people, medication is used cautiously and only where clearly indicated, at the lowest effective dose, alongside therapy and support. Any decision is explained fully to you.
Do parents attend the appointment? Yes, parents are involved appropriately. For adolescents, part of the session may also be one-to-one, balancing the young person's privacy with family involvement.
Can child and adolescent care be done online? Many assessments and follow-ups work well online, which suits busy families. Some situations are better in person, and this is discussed.
My teenager refuses to come — what can I do? This is common. Contact the practice; an initial parent consultation can help you understand the concern and find a way to engage your teenager.
